Adherence to antiepileptic drug therapy

19 December 2022

Adherence to antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy is crucial for successful treatment of the disease, but adherence and persistence rates are low due to several barriers.

Non-adherence to antiepileptic pharmacotherapy is a common and serious problem.

  • Non-compliance significantly reduces the success of treatment.
  • The consequences of non-compliance may not appear immediately, which can cause complacency.
  • Once-daily dosing regimens can increase adherence and thus improve treatment outcomes.
  • Resources are available describing techniques to promote and assess adherence to recommendations.
