Zhe doctor's behaviour has an important but under-researched impact on children's and parents' adherence to recommendations. To address this need, research was reviewed in the following topic areas: children and adolescents' perceptions of physician behaviour in the management of chronic diseases in children; parents' perceptions of physician behaviour in the management of chronic diseases in children; physician adherence to guidelines for the management of chronic diseases in children; physician communication of information regarding the management of chronic diseases in children; the relationship between physician behaviour and adherence to treatment recommendations; and interventions to improve physician management of chronic diseases in children. The results highlight discrepancies between the needs of parents and adolescents and the behaviour of physicians, as well as inconsistencies in physician behaviour, including adherence to practice guidelines, which may limit children's adherence to treatment recommendations. However, the results of interventions to improve asthma management in children are promising. Future research should be based on a comprehensive model of physician behaviour in the management of chronic diseases that takes into account contextual considerations (e.g. Culture and socioeconomic status), identifies clinically relevant intervention targets and documents the impact on health outcomes. An approach to chronic disease management that engages physicians in active communication, support and decision-making with children with chronic illness and their parents should be developed and evaluated.
