Adherence to treatment is a major determinant of treatment success. Non-adherence is a serious problem that affects not only the patient but also the healthcare system. Patient non-adherence leads to significant worsening of disease, death and increased healthcare costs. Adherence can be affected by many different factors. Barriers to adherence can be thought of as patient, provider and health system factors, with interactions between them. Identifying the specific barriers for each patient and adopting appropriate techniques to overcome them will be necessary to improve adherence to medical recommendations. Healthcare professionals such as doctors, pharmacists and nurses play a significant role in their daily practice in improving patient adherence.
