The dangers of medical ethics (2005)

19 December 2022

The prevailing conception of medical ethics taught in UK and US medical schools is pointless at best and dangerous at worst. While it is commendable that medical schools have now given medical ethics a secure place in the curriculum, they wrongly treat it as a body of scientific knowledge. Ethics is a unique subject precisely because of its widespread presence in all walks of life, and any teaching must start from this common ethical understanding and from the familiar ethical concepts of colloquial language.
