The enigma of doctor-patient relationship

19 December 2022

The doctor-patient relationship is central to healthcare delivery. In the past, the relationship was seen as that between the 'healer' and the patient. Nowadays, however, this relationship is seen as an interaction between provider and recipient. The doctor-patient bond based on trust is an integral part of patient care and has been described as promoting recovery, reducing relapse and increasing adherence to treatment recommendations. Patients' increasing distrust of physicians leads them to change physicians frequently and, as a result, patients are at risk of losing the therapeutic benefits of the doctor-patient relationship. The doctor-patient relationship is under-researched in areas of health need, such as rural areas. Advances in medicine, and the availability of many experts for patients to choose from, seems to be a boon turning into a doom.
