The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge on factors affecting nurse-physician communication and interventions developed to improve nurse-physician communication. A total of 22 studies were included in the review. Four themes emerged from the data synthesis, namely communication styles, factors facilitating nurse-physician communication, barriers to effective nurse-physician communication and interventions to improve nurse-physician communication. This integrative review suggests that nurse-physician communication remains ineffective. Current interventions only address the information needs of nurses and doctors in limited situations and specific settings. Organisational and cultural changes in the area of nurse-physician communication are needed to overcome entrenched practices.
