The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the paradigm of doctor-patient communication with the rapid adoption of video-based medical visits by most of the medical community. The aim of this article is to identify effective techniques for surgeons to build rapport during video consultations and to design and pilot activities that would enhance students' communication skills during video consultations. Several elements of virtual communication required a greater focus on communicating empathy and care. Patient suffering was more difficult to interpret in the conditions mentioned above. In view of this, direct questions were recommended to understand the patient's emotional state. Undoubtedly, there is a need to teach videoconferencing communication skills to enable surgical teams to build relationships in this distinct form of consultation.
