Video consultation during follow up care: effect on quality of care and patient- and provider attitude in patients with colorectal cancer

18 December 2022

Video consultation is gaining importance as a possible alternative to outpatient visits. However, little is known about satisfaction and quality of care using video instead of face-to-face consultation. The aim of this observational survey study was to compare attitudes towards and satisfaction with video consultation among colorectal cancer patients and their surgeons. Of the 50 patients, 42% chose videoconsultation as their preferred method of observation. Patients who chose face-to-face contact seemed to question the surgeon's ability to correctly assess their condition by using a video call ( p = 0.024). Surgeons were very satisfied with the use of distance communication methods. Based on patient preference, video consultation is equivalent to face-to-face consultation in terms of patient satisfaction and perceived quality of care. There is a preference for shared decision-making regarding which method of contact is used during follow-up.
