Developing skilled doctor-patient communication in the workplace: a qualitative study of the experiences of trainees and clinical supervisors

18 December 2022

In order to develop recommendations to facilitate the learning of doctor-patient communication skills in the workplace, the cited qualitative study analyses the experiences of trainees and supervisors on how trainees learn to communicate and how supervisors support their learning in the workplace. Based on the experiences of trainees and supervisors, it can be concluded that skilful communication involves the development of a personal repertoire of communication, from which trainees are able to apply strategies that fit the context and their personal style. In addition, it may be advisable to give students concrete examples and allow them to reflect on their personal frames of reference and the effects of the strategies, and to provide space for their sense of authenticity.
