Taking Your Medicine Relational Steps to Improving Patient Compliance

16 December 2022

Patient non-adherence to medical recommendations is a major problem that costs billions of dollars each year. This study confirms the important role of communication, both as a form of information exchange and social support, and participatory decision-making in improving patient adherence. These results, based on structural equation modelling, also support the interaction of communication and participatory decision-making positively influencing compliance. The results suggest that unilateral physician-to-patient communication and patient education will not independently solve adherence problems. Instead, the solution revolves around an open, two-way exchange of information, active listening by both parties and truly informed patient consent.
