Bioethics began when interdisciplinary scientists joined biomedical institutions to serve on newly formed bioethics committees and hospital ethics committees. These were outsiders, and their presence was initially opposed by some in the medical community, but over time they were integrated into institutions that many initially criticised. This work changed medical practice, but it also required compromises and intellectual costs. Also, the successful integration of bioethics was partly based on structural features of post-war medicine without a clear counterpart in contemporary neuroscience. New and imaginative approaches will also be needed for neuroethics. While neuroethics has so far focused somewhat narrowly on issues of neurotechnology, this article argues that successful integration in neuroethics is likely to require a broader vision that includes clinical neuroscience as well as questions at the interface between neuroscience and society.
