On 16 April 2011, an international scientific symposium was held on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the School and the Institute of Public Health of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Jagiellonian University Medical College entitled 'Public Health in Europe'. The conference brought together nearly 200 participants - students and graduates of the School. In addition to them, special guests included John Dalli - European Union Commissioner for Health and Consumers, Professor Helmut Brand - President-elect of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), Dr Marek Haber - Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Poland, Dr Maciej Piróg - Adviser to the President of the Republic of Poland on Health, and Dr Andrzej Ryś - Director of Public Health at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Consumers, who was Director of the School of Public Health from 1992 to 1996.
