Progressive social change and the development of biomedical sciences have led to patients participating in the therapeutic process demanding comprehensive and comprehensible information on the services offered to them. Only complete and exhaustive access to all information related to the therapeutic process enables the patient to make a decision and give his/her consent to the action proposed to him/her. The aim of this paper is to discuss the patient's right to information and the characteristics of informed consent. The paper discusses the criteria for informed consent and analyses the legal and ethical norms regarding the patient's duty to inform and obtain consent for a healthcare service. The focus is on patients of legal age, capable of understanding information and giving consent.
