Ethics in nursing practice

14 December 2022

Nurses make countless decisions about patient care in their practice. Each such decision translates into a concrete action aimed at helping the patient. There is a huge area of ordinary day-to-day nursing action that promotes the moral well-being of patients - treating them fairly, providing respect, giving them relevant information about their care and treatment, respecting cultural values and views, using measures that effectively alleviate discomfort, providing appropriate support when the whole health care system seems to be failing them, showing them devotion, dedication, care, attention, interest in a way that is prompt and appropriate to the situation.

Nurses should never underestimate their individual abilities in achieving morally good results in the conditions in which they live and work. Nurses are not always expected to perform great heroic deeds, but only ordinary gestures of kindness, compassion, honesty or attention to those in their care or to their colleagues.

This publication is a guide through the labyrinth of moral dilemmas that accompany nurses on a daily basis - examples based on nurses' real-life experiences allow you to understand the moral dimension of patient care and put into practice actions that will serve the good of the patient in every sense of the word.
