Factors contributing to treatment adherence are poorly understood, but it is known that one of the factors influencing patient adherence is doctor-patient interactions. W of this meta-analysis, a systematic review of the published literature was conducted to determine the magnitude of the relationship between physician-patient collaboration and patient adherence. A statistically significant weighted mean effect size of M (d) = 0.145 from 48 published studies showed that better physician-patient collaboration was associated with better patient adherence. The association between collaboration and adherence persisted for paediatric and adult populations, chronic and acute diseases, and GPs and specialists. These results highlight the need for physician-patient collaboration in medical consultations. Taking the patient's perspective into account during the consultation is essential to establishing a collaborative relationship after the patient leaves the doctor's surgery.
