The cognitive and emotional dimensions of the doctor-patient relationship (work alliance) have been examined in relation to patients' beliefs about the usefulness of treatment (perceived usefulness), patients' beliefs about their ability to adhere to treatment (adherence to self-efficacy beliefs), patients' adherence to the treatment plan (adherence to recommendations) and patients' satisfaction. The results show that the work alliance can be measured in medical care and appears to be strongly related to patients' adherence and satisfaction with treatment. The work alliance is important in treatment because it is related to patient adherence and satisfaction. Patients' sense of self-efficacy should be promoted as it is linked to treatment adherence.
