Palliative care offers careful pain and symptom management, additional support for patients and families, and assistance with difficult medical decisions along with any desired treatments, but does not encompass the comprehensive system of care that hospice provides. The authors of this volume use a series of case presentations in each chapter to illustrate some of the challenges of palliative care and hospice with significant ethical dimensions in three overarching areas: 1) systems of care delivery; 2) addressing multiple dimensions of suffering; and 3) difficult decisions at the end of life. The co-authors are some of the most experienced researchers in palliative care, hospice and ethics in North America and Western Europe.
