Solidarity and the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights

Recent work has highlighted the importance of the concept of solidarity with bioethics and social philosophy in general. But can and should it appear in documents such as the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights as more than a vague concept with many possible interpretations? While noting the tension between universality and particularity that such documents must entail, and noting that solidarity has political content, the article examines the suggestion that solidarity should occupy a more central place in international law.
