New technologies that allow the mechanisms and functions of the brain to be studied have shown great promise in the treatment of brain disease and injury. These new technologies also provide the means to assess and manipulate human consciousness, cognition, emotion and behaviour, bringing with them the potential to change society. This book explores the technical, moral, legal and socio-political issues that arise in and from today's applications of neuroscience and technology and discusses their implications for the future. With contributions from an international group of experts on the cutting edge of neurotechnology, this volume provides a basis for appreciating the ethical, legal and social aspects of science in a way that keeps pace with this rapidly evolving field.
