BOUNDARIES IN THE DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP

Boundaries of the doctor-patient relationship is an important concept that helps healthcare professionals navigate the complex and sometimes difficult patient-physician experience, in which intimacy and power must be balanced towards benefiting patients. The article discusses the concept of boundary-breaking and boundary-crossing in the doctor-patient relationship, and warns of some types of boundary dilemmas related to dual relationships, gift-giving practices, physical contact with patients and self-disclosure. The article concludes with some recommendations for preventing boundary violations
