The shift to patient-centred medical practice is important to ensure appropriate and sustainable healthcare. Narrative medicine suggests that patients should be meaningfully involved in diagnosis and treatment. Thus, in order to understand the meaning of symptoms and interventions, physicians need to enter the world of patients' lives. Is narrative medicine possible in current medical practice? The article argues that engaging the patient's perspective during a medical visit does not necessarily require a lengthy interview. A new orientation to this process that emphasises dialogue between doctors and patients should be considered. In this new model, the goal of the visit is effective communication and mutual understanding of the illness.
