Patient-centered communication in the era of electronic health records: what does the evidence say?

18 December 2022

Patient-doctor communication is essential for patient-centred healthcare. Physicians are concerned that electronic health records negatively impact patient communication. The results showed that the use of an EHR (electronic health record) improves the capture and sharing of certain biomedical information. However, it may interfere with the collection of psychosocial and emotional information and therefore may interfere with the development of supportive, healing relationships. However, patient access to the EHR and messaging functions can improve communication, patient empowerment, engagement and self-management.
