Physician's gender, communication style, patient preferences and patient satisfaction in gynecology and obstetrics: A systematic review

18 December 2022

The aim of this article is to review research published over the last 10 years on women seeking gynaecological-obstetric care and the gender of the doctor in relation to patient preferences, differences in communication style and patient satisfaction. The majority of patients preferred a female to a male obstetrician-gynaecologist. This can partly be explained by the more patient-centred communication style used by female obstetrician-gynaecologists. Also, experience and clinical competence were important factors in the choice of obstetrician-gynaecologist. It was not clear whether patients' age or ethnicity influenced patients' gender preference. Patient satisfaction increased when obstetrician-gynaecologists used a patient-centred communication style. Therefore, it can be concluded that in order to increase patient satisfaction, obstetrician-gynaecologists should learn to incorporate a patient-centred communication style in their consultations.
