Good communication in psychiatry - a conceptual review

18 December 2022

Communication between doctor and patient is at the heart of psychiatric treatment. However, little attention has so far been given to practical training in this area and there is no specific theory about what constitutes good communication in psychiatry. This review aims to identify the principles that guide good communication. It identifies five guiding principles for clinicians: focus on patient concerns, respect, appropriate patient involvement in decision-making, authenticity and use of a psychological model of treatment. These principles can inform further empirical research on effective communication in psychiatry.
