Communication behaviours and patient autonomy in hospital care: A qualitative study

18 December 2022

Shared decision-making is not always the norm in hospital care. Although doctors explain treatment plans, many hospitalised patients do not understand them enough to make autonomous decisions. In the present study, all doctors explained the care plan to patients, and most believed that the patient understood them. However, for many patients the issue still remained incomprehensible. Moreover, the doctors rarely asked the patient's opinion. It is worth pointing out that improving hospital communication can promote patient autonomy.
