In the systematic review presented here, 60% studies showed a positive effect of the doctor-patient relationship on health status. The role of information gathering and communication (patient education) was most frequently investigated, yielding a clearly positive effect on the relationship. Communication skills were furthermore associated with a better understanding of the emotions surrounding the treatment process. Furthermore, two studies that included an economic evaluation showed reduced costs associated with proper doctor-patient communication for the healthcare system.
