This study aims to assess the unmet information needs of Dutch and Turkish-Dutch general practitioners (GPs) patients in the Netherlands. In addition, the relationship between perceived and recorded information provided by GPs is investigated. The unmet information needs of patients of Dutch origin ( N = 117) and Turkish-Dutch ( N = 74) were assessed using questionnaires before and after the consultation. Recordings of GP consultations were made to code the information provided by the GP. Turkish-Dutch patients have more unmet information needs than native Dutch patients, especially those who identify equally with Dutch and Turkish culture. In general, perceived information provision has nothing to do with documented information provision. GPs insufficiently provide Turkish-Dutch patients, and to a lesser extent patients of Dutch origin, with the information they need. GPs should be trained to provide appropriate, tailored information to patients of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
