ENDOMETRIOSIS AND QUALITY OF LIFE

14 December 2022

Endometriosis is a disease involving the implantation of endometrial structures outside the uterine cavity. In Poland, about 1 million women suffer from it. The problem is serious, but still underestimated. Endometriosis is characterised by three main symptoms: pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse and problems with getting pregnant. The aim of this study was to answer the question of whether endometriosis affects the quality of life of women suffering from it, whether nurses have an impact on the healing process and improvement of their quality of life, and how the patients evaluate the nursing care in the unit where they stayed. The study found that the symptoms of the disease can interfere in all spheres of life, making it impossible to meet many needs that are important to women. 54% of the subjects experienced anxiety, frustration and loneliness. 14% had difficulty getting pregnant and 44% had no offspring of their own. 94% experienced severe pain during menstruation, while 64% also experienced pain outside menstruation. Only 15 of the 150 women declared that they did not use painkillers. This demonstrates that pain is the predominant symptom of this disease and negatively affects the quality of life of the affected women. During their stay in hospital, patients need the specialised assistance of nurses working in the gynaecology unit. Through their professionalism, the nurses implement the care plan at the highest level and educate the patients. Interacting with the entire therapeutic team in the hospital and the patient's family, they help to find the right health-promoting solutions to facilitate recovery. All of these activities have a strong impact on the healing process, the feeling of satisfaction and contentment, and therefore an improved quality of life, as confirmed by studies.http://www.h-ph.pl/pdf/hyg-2012/hyg-2012-4-408.pdf
