Recently, there has been a successive increase in interest in the quality of life of chronically ill patients. With the amount of research, new definitions of the concept and specific tools to measure it are emerging. A review of the literature indicates a reduction in the quality of life of chronically ill patients, in particular psychiatric, oncology and alcohol-dependent patients. Alcohol-dependent people attending self-help group meetings have the potential to improve their quality of life even to the level of healthy people.
