Chronic diseases are a major cause of death in most countries around the world. Due to their nature and aetiology, the risk of chronic diseases increases with age. The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases is also influenced by an ageing population due to low birth rates and increasing life expectancy. Chronic diseases cause disability and low quality of life despite mortality. Chronic diseases also have an economic impact, affecting the current economy and future growth. Fortunately, many risk factors for chronic diseases are known and preventable. All of the above-mentioned aspects of chronic diseases were the reason for the development of the 'healthy ageing' strategy, i.e. 'helping people live long and productive lives and enjoy a good quality of life'.
