Adherence to treatment recommendations by primary care patients

14 December 2022

Patient non-adherence is one of the main clinical problems in primary care settings. Patients who deviate from treatment or discontinue therapy altogether risk worsening their condition, additional costs and sometimes even death. Despite this, an average of one in two chronic patients does not adhere to treatment recommendations. Unexpectedly, the same is true for acute symptomatic diseases such as infections. Patient non-adherence is associated with more frequent visits to the doctor, more complications and treatment failure. This article presents a comprehensive review of the causes and consequences of non-adherence, as well as methods that GPs can use to improve adherence in their patients.
