"Every doctor, whether he or she works in a large multi-profile hospital or in a rural primary care clinic, has a duty to inform the patient about various matters. The purpose of doing so is, on the one hand, to protect the patient's health and, on the other hand, to enable the patient to make an intelligent decision regarding his or her condition. This duty assumes particular importance before surgical procedures or examinations involving interference with the patient's body. The doctor is therefore required in such situations to explain to the patient the reasons for the procedure, the risks involved and the consequences of not carrying it out.
