The monograph is the first attempt in Polish literature to present comprehensively the bioethical standards of the Council of Europe concerning the issue of origin of human life in the context of development of biology and medicine. After an initial characterisation of bioethics and defining its place in the system of human rights protection of the Council of Europe, the author concentrates his considerations on the issue of the normative status of human life at the prenatal stage, assisted procreation techniques, including in vitro fertilisation, prenatal and pre-implantation diagnosis, embryo research and cloning. A general reflection on the state and quality of the Council of Europe's bioethical standards in the field of human biogenesis, as well as possible directions for their development, completes the book.
