The physiotherapy-patient relationship is a specific type of contact as it involves the violation of boundaries defined by socio-cultural norms, for example through personal questions or physical contact required during certain diagnostic and treatment procedures. The therapeutic relationship generates a kind of proximity as there is contact between the physiotherapist and the patient on a physical, psychological and social level during treatment. This type of situation can foster attempts to violate boundaries by either party to the interaction.
