The Poznan University of Medical Sciences, in cooperation with the Poznan City Hall, has published a handbook entitled 'Cultural determinants of patient care'. The publication, in the form of a circular booklet, is addressed to doctors, nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists and all professionals who have contact with patients.

As Prof Michal Musielak, Vice-Chancellor for Promotion and Cooperation with the Region at Poznan University of Medical Sciences, said at the press conference, the handbook just published is one of the first such publications in Poland. It was created as a result of a discussion five years ago at the 'Four Cultures, Four Religions' conference about the needs in the context of patients from different parts of the world.

According to Youssef Khadid, a Poznan imam who participated in the creation of a guide on the treatment of patients from a different cultural background, it is encouraging that something is beginning to change in this area. For a Muslim, staying in hospital can be difficult. He doesn't eat pork, he prays five times a day... It's important when the staff know about such customs.
